The Inside Out

My project explored how clothing can act as both protection and expression, reflecting how we perform and adapt to navigate a mentally demanding world. I was interested in the idea that we are layered human beings, often constructing facades to conceal vulnerability. This led me to experiment how sculptural ready-to-wear garments could reveal the tension between the inner self and the way we present outselves.

Through the reinterpretation of historical structures like corsets and panniers, I examined how form and restriction shape identity. Hand-constructed cartridge pleats became a key technique, allowing me to build volume and texture while exploring contrasts between softness and rigidity using silk chiffon and horsehair canvas.

This project is important to me because it turned personal experiences of vulnerability and resilience into something tangible. It challenges traditional fashion and societal norms showing that clothing can do more than decorate, it can protect, express, and tell a story. I wanted the collection to highlight how our identities are layered and performative while celebrating strength, fragility, and self-expression. The garments invite reflection and encourage both wearer and viewer to engage with emotions in a physical, meaningful way, offering a fresh perspective on what fashion can communicate.
