The Joy of Knowing Stuff
The Joy of Knowing Stuff investigates how communication design can encourage curiosity and make New Zealand general knowledge more engaging, accessible and memorable for young adults. The project responds to concerns about declining general knowledge and an increasing reliance on digital technology to access information amongst young adults. It explores how a printed publication can encourage more active engagement with New Zealand’s history, culture and everyday stories.
The project proposes that playful design can make local knowledge more approachable and encourage curiosity beyond digital platforms. Contextual research into communication design, visual storytelling and existing publications informed the development of a printed publication featuring colourful collage, structured typography, Kiwi humour and informal writing.
The design process involved contextual research, brainstorming, sketching, collage, prototyping and feedback. Supporting outcomes include postcards, posters and an Instagram page, extending the publication’s visual identity across different formats.
The project demonstrates how print-based communication design can present
New Zealand general knowledge in an engaging and accessible way. By combining visual storytelling with approachable writing, The Joy of Knowing Stuff aims to spark curiosity, encourage discovery and strengthen young adults’ connections with local knowledge.
