Situated on 41/37 Nuffield Street, Newmarket is ‘The Lantern’, which is a comic book store and ramen bar for those in the busy streets of Newmarket.

Looking through comics and manga I was intrigued by how the different line weights and brush strengths could change the appearance of such a light material into a heavy form, through observation and research a lantern was the perfect representation of this concept.

In my design I created a harsh repetitive shelving that wraps around the building. These shelves create that lantern effect on the outside of the building and are lit up by LED lights, while also used for holding books in the interior space. The materials speak to the concept, all following the idea of reflection and lightness while in contrast with a deep dark red that creates a moody interior so the lantern light features create a beautiful ambiance.
