The Places We Carry
My artwork, The Places we Carry, explores the ocean, memory, home, and the idea of safe places. Growing up in Kororareka I was surrounded by nature and the ocean, which became a significant part of my life. These environments bring me a sense of calm, comfort and familiarity. Since moving to Auckland for this study these parts of my life haven't been so present, and I've become aware of how much these places influence my sense of belonging. Through this work I wanted to create a physical representation of the safe space I can return to in my mind, using fragments of places, experiences, and emotions.
I chose to explore these ideas through small elements collaged into one larger work, creating a mind map of memories. The memories include waves, islands, seascapes, trees, coral, and other places from experience. The textile making connects closely to the felted artworks I used to make as a child. I embraced this connection to childhood makings because the techniques themselves bring a sort of comfort and familiarity.
