Time-Lost Heritage
My project explores the revival of traditional textile patterns within a modern context through type and editorial design. The artefact includes a dust jacket and a publication that showcases traditional patterns, their history, and their significant cultural impacts, alongside a contemporary typeface from two selected regions: Central Thailand and Northeastern Thailand.
I considered focusing on honouring the craftsmanship, dedication, and artistry of Thai weavers in preserving weaving traditions while examining the history of Thai weaving and its lasting influence on the nation. This project highlights the significance of these patterns as a medium of expression through time and beyond language. However, I recognize the idea that "to move forward, we have to leave something behind," a paraphrase of Newton's Third Law that applies to all aspects of culture, including heritage, which may be lost over time. Therefore, the focus of this project is specifically on the patterns rather than the weaving practices themselves, as I believe this approach will resonate more with future generations of Thais around the globe and those who are interested in learning about the culture of Thailand.
