A Semiotic Exploration of Language

The [Un]Complex uses poetic writing and illustration in a practice-led project in the form of a publication. The artefact aims to portray the negative connotations the semiotic symbol [Un] assumes in culture whilst simultaneously encouraging the acceptance and embrace of [Un] words. This research sits within the realms of using poetry as a visual narrative and storytelling device, the epistemology of [Un] and the use of poetic language to evoke emotions. These are expanded upon primarily through ideation and sketching, semiotic analysis and elements of autoethnography whilst taking advantage of analysing critical feedback. This project contributes insight borrowed from personal experience on how to overcome the emotions of discomfort and uncertainty.
