The Voices He Hears

Bachelor of Design Editorial Human Centred Design Publication Gender Identity Social Good

An introspective publication to foster awareness of harmful masculinity in trending lyrics

This publication addresses the growing culture of toxic behaviour which is reinforced through violent, sexist and sexually objectifying lyrics. This project explores how design can be used as a tool to empower young men to reflect on the influence trending music lyrics have in shaping their identity, expectations and behaviour.

The output challenges young men to engage in critical self-reflection before adopting beliefs propagated by popular artists projecting unhealthy ideals. It spotlights the negative use of denigrating language and themes which may increase revenue in the industry but negatively influence communities of young men.

This project serves as an interactive educational tool aimed at encouraging young men to engage in critical self-examination, addressing the subconscious absorption of harmful messages in trending music lyrics.

This project is significant because it enables the audience of young men to critique the voices which may subconsciously influence their personal beliefs and formation of identity.

The colour palette was selected with the intention of breaking the stereotype that pink represents femininity to further push the message of critical self reflection on internalised messages.

This anti-stereotype colour choice empowers young men to acknowledge that their convictions can be moulded by the messages they encounter in popular culture, and analyse how stereotypes in lyrics may not be useful guides to cultivate a healthy sense of male identity.
