a haven for the vastly online community

The Ward, a discreet graphic novel store on Nuffield Street, draws inspiration from the overlooked comic gutter and alleyways. Designed as a poetic exploration of their liminal connections and overlooked utilitarian qualities, the store mirrors the essence of graphic novel enthusiasts, often overshadowed by their online communities.

The storefront blends into its surroundings by emulating Nuffield Lane’s alleyway, mirroring the lonesome exchange in which we share during moments of transition. The interior and its layouts provide a stark transition from the storefront into a clandestine bookshop, encouraging fans to purchase, share moments, and connect intimately.

At night, The Ward becomes an exclusive bar, a haven for patrons to bond over shared passions. The loyalty card system, earned through purchases, invites you to manga-themed cocktail nights, fostering real-world connections.

The transformative and hidden qualities of The Ward seek to extend beyond a graphic novel store to create a space where escapism, intimacy, and genuine connections converge.
