Stepping off the busy pavements of 302 Broadway into Traces of Impermanence, the frantic pace of the city immediately melts away. This project transforms a multi-level commercial space into an urban sanctuary—a place designed entirely around stillness, deep reflection, and human connection. Rooted in the quiet beauty of nature's impermanence and the physical marks we leave behind, the space acts as a gentle buffer between the bustling Newmarket streetscape and an inner world of calm.
The space spans the ground floor and basement and contains a creative print workshop, an artisanal café, and a botanical florist. They are in harmony: the café invites a mindful pause and gathering, and the florist breathes life into the air with fresh botanicals that also serve as raw materials for cyanotype, monotype, and screen printing workshops.
Specially designed multi-layered fabric curtains guide the journey through the levels. These soft partitions, hand-dyed and printed, filter light, sculpt the room's volume, and create moments of intimacy. Traces of Impermanence combines sensory hospitality with hands-on craft and raw, natural materiality, bringing a living community hub to life where people can slow down, look after themselves and explore their creativity.
