Traces, a manga bookstore, focuses on the concept of line qualities, deciphering codes, and the history of hand-making, reflecting the intricate art of manga. I began by breaking down a laser-engraved panel inspired by printmaking textures, exploring early forms of drawing like hieroglyphics. This led me to investigate paper qualities and ink fades - leaving traces to be deciphered, much like manga’s line qualities. In manga, the contrast between still and trembling lines act as a visual code for emotions, influencing my design. With a refined plum-toned palette and perforated metal panels, Traces emphasises texture and captures manga’s narrative energy while incorporating a clay and drawing workshop to strengthen a creative community that relates back to hand-made qualities.
