Letter{forms} from the body: Visualising the invisible pain of endometriosis
“It’s not nothing.”
{ unseen } “ unspoken ” explored how analogue, experimental type objects can help visualise the invisible pain of endometriosis. Using simple craft materials, I made handmade letter{forms} that served as physical metaphors for pain. Each object expressed a different sensation, from personal experience, of the physiological and social experience of endometriosis. These were photographed and curated into a publication, activated through a poster series, and an interactive website.
Different paper stocks, sewn and loose inserts, and shifting typographic rhythms created a reading experience that felt uncomfortable and unpredictable, reflecting the reality of living with the condition. The work showed how tangible type objects can give shape to something unseen and often dismissed. Through tactility and visual storytelling, the project offered a clearer, more empathetic way to start discussion around a prominent women’s health issue.
