Vanua - "To put in"

Is a design proposed for a comic store located on
41/37 Nuffield Street, Newmarket.

The history of Newmarket highlights its vitality in
connecting the various Auckland routes and suburbs.
The comic store brief created an opportunity
to use the idea of ‘closure’ and ‘being’ in space
illustrated in manga aspect-to-aspect transitions.
Manga is about experiencing the destination rather
than getting to the destination in western comics’
action-to-action transitions.
The ‘space between’ each image in comics is
translated to the idea of Va “space between”
in pacific cultures. The idea is also combined with
the idea of ‘being’ in space illustrated in manga.
Pacific thinking has naturally led to the use of
Lalava a traditional pacific binding technique;
translated into ‘Lala’ (intersection of two) and ‘va’
the space between.
