You, Me—and GPT; an exploratory campaign on AI dependency

My project explored dependency on artificial intelligence, aiming to educate 14–30-year-olds on the dangers that reliance on these technologies poses to critical thinking, autonomy, and self-expression. I considered how the growing normalisation of AI in daily life reflects a loss of independence, and sought to communicate this through a campaign that parallels AI dependency with relationship dependency. This comparison highlights how our trust in these tools can mirror the harmful dynamics found in relationships where one surrenders control or individuality.

The concept was expressed through self-referential design, using visual cues drawn from AI’s own patterns and glitches to reflect its flaws and limitations. I developed a series of moving image posters and a public sticker installation that directed audiences to an interactive website. There, users could explore modules unpacking different aspects of AI use, each designed to raise awareness of its impact on thought, creativity, and personal agency.

This project addressed the lack of accessible AI literacy for young people, encouraging reflection and more mindful engagement with emerging technologies. By framing AI reliance through familiar emotional experiences, I aimed to foster empathy, awareness, and critical distance from our growing technological dependence.
