Leno is a modern furniture piece inspired by the overuse of personal devices in social settings. With new technology constantly evolving, we seem to have lost some of our connection to one another when sitting at a table. Leno was created to influence users to engage, interact and connect with one another in social and dining experiences. It is a playful take on the classic playground seesaw, enlightening users with nostalgia from youth and encouraging a deeper connection between loved ones and strangers alike.

Users are influenced to reduce their personal device usage and enhance connection with those who sit across from them. The steel bar sits on a pivot point, which carries the pair on timber seats and in turn leans with cooperation from both parties. This functioning prototype allows users to experience the social benefits of this product. Leno was designed with the idea that it could be used in the hospitality industry, however the idea of it being placed in public spaces could be further explored. Sharing moments and being fully engaged while sitting down with others is crucial to human connection. If one user needs to leave the table, a latch pin lock located below the tabletop, in the steel frame, can be engaged which stops the seats from moving.

The Leno can be made in a variety of colours, including different coloured timbers, as well as different coloured powder coated steel. This makes the Leno more versatile, as users can choose which colours suit their design style. This modern furniture piece separates technology from the table, giving users the chance to fully engage with those they are with. Whether it is sharing a meal, simply catching up with loved ones or engaging with someone new, Leno is a bold representation of communication inspiring new conversation.
