Monkey

My capstone project ‘Monkey’ is a VFX short film that is inspired by the playfulness of childhood. My project aims to answer the research question ‘through the exploration of hair simulation, how can I believably integrate a 3D character into a live action short film, in order to emotionally connect with the audience and evoke feelings of love and friendship’

Monkey a VFX short film that was created during the first New Zealand lockdown. The film focusses on a little girl and her favourite toy which comes to life in her dreams. The film is heavily influenced by the Super 8 film format which I have tried to recreate digitally in the hopes of creating a sense of nostalgia. In my film I have attempted to recreate a digital version of the real toy by using XGen fur which assisted with my research question. Works that have influenced my storyline and final film are films such as My Neighbour Totoro (Miyazaki, 1988) Christopher Robin (Forster, 2018) and Detective Pikachu (Letterman, 2019)
